Today was the first day of snow at Edinboro! It was sorta funny, especially seeing people complain that werent from the Erie Area. Apparently lake effect snow is new to some people. The Jeep actually handled quite well in the snow, and I got to edinboro without any problems.
Then today I got together with my advisor, mentor, and peers to go over how to schedule. It was very helpful because I have no clue what they were doing. All in all it was a fun day. :-)
Today in Speech class we had Tom Myers speak. Tom is running for the same position as Kyle Foust, in the democratic primaries. His speech was the usual, he talked about a lot of the issues he feels important. He came to the issue of the war in Iraq and nipped it at the bud. His solution, "get them out, but I have no clue how" (or something to that effect). To me Tom Myers with this solution seemed human. I believe in the war, I think it was the right thing to do. I also believe in troop with drawl but like Tom I have no clue how to do it in a safe manner. So to me, and I believe everyone else in the room, this was a very good appeasing answer.
When it came time for question and answer session I thought Tom would get off easy. He had already essentially eliminated the War from coming up again, so it should be easy for him, right? NOT!! Someone asked the candidate if he believed marijuana should be legalized, his answer was (in a more complicated way of saying) No. Then the student began coming up with some good theory behind his argument and almost pinned Tom Myers against the wall with it.
Tom Myers answered the question with astonishing composure. Even though the whole class was just waiting for this candidate, with admitted minimal political experience, to fail he pulled it through. Most impressively he supported his argument while expressing respect for the questioner. He also asked us to perhaps put aside this one issue (Legalizing marijuana) and look at others reasons we could vote for him.
However, despite his great performance there's still that side that realizes, he is a politician. When listening to any candidate from either party you have to wonder "Is this person lieing to my face"? And of course during the presentation Tom (as well as Kyle last class) ripped apart incumbent Phil English. While they do this it almost makes me wonder if they are telling me the truth, or if they are just out to get their competitor.
Anyways, thats the wonderful political experience of my week. I really dont understand why more americans choose to not exersice their right to vote. This whole ordeal almost makes me want to get into politics, but for now, I'll stick with my Public Relations major.
Well today in my speech class Kyle Foust, a current Erie city-council man, who is running for congress spoke. His message was the usual boring message. When he was finished he opened it up for discussion. As is the norm in college, when the teacher opens things up for questions, no one asks because everyone wants to get dismissed early. The teacher read our minds and reminded us of the participation quota, and told us we would not get our early so we should ask questions. A couple questions were asked, mainly some easy ones, and then everything broke lose.
I really have no clue what this candidate was thinking, or how he didn't see this problem coming. Nearly every American (myself included) believes we should with drawl our troops from Iraq. Candidite Foust harped on this during his speech like it was something new and we had never heard it before. However, during the question time someone confronted him about it, and in a nice poliete manner asked how he planned on doing this.
I think everyone in the room expected his to come up with a typical democratic response, and he did something of the sort. He was not prepared though for the followup question that came with it and started to lose his cool. Once he was in this little hole (which he very easly could have recovered from) someone else noted the inaccuracies of his speech and asked more questions. He completely lost it by then and started getting quite irrate. He was only saved by the fact that we ran out of time.
And that is why I will not vote for Kyle Foust in the 2008 election (that is if he makes it past the primaries)
Well yesterday the School was having a blood drive. So megan and I decided to go donate some of our blood. (What better way for two cousins to bond lol) Well the whole process was actually pretty good, being a first time donor and all. There was pretty much no pain. I was all done and feeling really good about helping people in such a way. I hoped down off the bed feeling great, bent over to get my bag (AND FREE T-SHIRT!) and started to walk over to the finilization table where free sugary foods were avaliable, and you were required to sit for two minuites. However my feeling great quickly wore off... i began to stagger towards the chair i was heading too... everything got a little dizzy, and pretty soon i could feel my head spinning and could hardly see anything. But i could hear ppl asking me if i was ok... As if it wasnt obvious i was about to pass out or anything. Finally someone started to ring a bell and i was caught by someone who led me the rest of the way over and onto a cot where i could lay down. They then gave me a wet paper towel and put it on my forehead. Soon after they gave me the towel i felt much better.... but that was my first time donating blood, and it so happened to be at the wonderful Edinboro University.
Well today i made a really big mistake. I was in such a hurry to get to the library early to print a paper before class, that i forgot to turn off my lights. When i went to leave (and i was pretty much exhausted and dont feel well) my battery was dead. So not having much choice and having an empty parking space infront of me, decided to try and pushstart it myself. I got out of the car and started pushing, not exactly sure how i would get it going fast enough by myself, but i couldnt get ahold of any of my friends. As i started some guy ive never met before, asked me if i needed help. So he pushed and i tried popping the clutch but it didnt work. As we tried someone drove by and suggested we try it in 4 Low to get it to start easier. Then another guy drove buy and said he use to have to push start his alot and he'd give us a hand. So this other guy who i have no clue who he was either, stopped and helped push. We got the Jeep into the main isle so we could get a better speed going. Then another guy came and helped push. So the moral of the story is #1 dont leave your lights on, and #2 there are some pretty nice ppl out there. The one thing i will never get though is there is no warning for when the lights are left on, but the car is off. However, when the battery was dead and the key was in the igniton it would beep like crazy... id really like to meet the guy who invented that...
When I got home from my second completed week of college I had quite the suprise. My dad was holding my brand new 13.3 in Toshiba Satellite Notebook :-) So now i dont have to fight people to log onto the computers at school.
Well the weekend came and went, even though i was enjoying being down here for college, it was still nice to take a break and relax. Well... relax other than reading my 700 page book due in a couple of weeks. But it was very nice to have out with My Family and Emily :-) after a couple picnics and a seawolves game im ready to hit the books... (well sorta)
Today was a rather interesting morning. A new friend of mine said she had meet someone at orientation and given them her information because they were looking for someone to do a commercial for the college. She organized this meeting with thim after many changes and they told her she could bring some people. Since it started at 8am I was the only one that meet her. We went and tried to find out where we were suppoused to go. The whole time i thought it was some ellaborate "stupid freshman" joke that she was about to fall into, but i figured hey why not, so we kept going. Well when we finally got to where we were suppoused to go, which was ironically behind the clock tower, we were met by a camera crew of 25+ people. It was actually a very cool experience, everyone was really nice as they offered us free food while playing with their iphones. We took about 20 tries of walking from point a to point b before they got one that had good lighting, proper pace, and a agreed location. It was well worth the $20 we made. They said the commercial will be airing in Pennyslvania, New York, and Ohio... so you might just see me on TV.
Today was day two of school, it was the first day for some of my classes though. Today I found the class that I am going to struggle most at; Psychology of Communication (yuck).. the professor just seemed slightly unprofessonal and rude.. The rest of the day went pretty well though, i met some people that are actually at Edinboro to study, its amazing.
My first day of class actually ok.
1st I showed up and forget to get my registration to get my parking permit... so i had to go to the back of the line and start all over again... but other than that it wasnt too bad. My first class i was extremly nervous for, once i finally found the room which already had about 10 students in it, noone talked. The only noise that was heard the entire time was that of text messaging, but once my professor got there things started fine. I was extremly nervous to participate but that was our professors number one request. To the left is the very first book im supposed to read and take an opinion one... It should be interesting.
